Gold Bond Coleman Sells High

This Coleman Gold Bond Stamps lantern...ended on eBay 12/15. Sold: $620. Whew...that's serious money.

I see a couple more on eBay...Collector's Grade Coleman Gold Bond lantern which ends later today...12/16...is already over $850. Ending 12/20 is Vintage 1972 Gold Coleman Lantern 200A which is hanging around $150.

A Light in a Storm

Very nice Gold Bond 200A up at eBay...just a few dings on the hood it looks like. These gold lanterns were made for the Gold Bond Trading Stamp company and not too many. Hard to find in this condition.

Sweet 1966 Coleman 200A

Red Coleman lantern in the original box. Lantern is as close to mint condition as they come. Lantern appears to have been used very little if at all. The model is a 200A and it is dated on the bottom 8/66.

eBay Hot Sale - Week 3/2007

"Wow! That's a lot of money!" My exact thoughts when I saw the closing price on this 1973 Gold Bond 200A which ended 1/16. For those not familiar with the Gold Bond, it's a gold-color Coleman 200A that was made for the Gold Bond Trading Stamp Company in the early to mid 70s. My mother used to save Gold Bond stamps, also Blue Chip stamps, and the green ones. But she never traded them for a cool gold lantern. I think she got a red fondue pot. and bongo drums.
Anyway, the Gold Bond 200A is a pretty scarce lantern, but you'll see one or two a month on eBay. They generally settle in the $300 to $500 range depending on how flush the bidder is. And by flush I mean drunk.
The buyer of this latest Gold Bond was bombed out of his mind and the gavel came down at $921.11. Wow, that's a lot of money for a lantern that has been used (despite the sellers claims otherwise) and with a chip in the hood. I think its going to take a lot of sake to make the sweetheart pretty again.

Action seemed a little light last week. High gavel on eBay last week for a 200A was the $174.50 realized for this very nice 1978 lantern with clamshell case.

Top auction price for a 200a last week was the $336 realized for this sweet, virginal beauty from 1963. Got to love it...the seller bought this baby in 1964 when he was 19 years old and never even fueled it up.
That's amazing! When I was 19 I was a rapacious consumer. I would have fired it up and set it on the kitchen table just to watch it burn.
Definate lack of self-control.

Zack in Saskatoon got hold of a geiger counter to see if these glowing nocturnal emissions are anything to worry about.

Got to say that that is one pretty lantern. But I just don't think I could march into the woods swinging a pink lantern. Gets lonely in those hills you know.

Radioactive Lantern Mantles

That's fascinating I thought as I was slogging through the world wide web earlier today. I happened upon an article on The Straight Dope website that explained how lantern mantles used to contain the radioactive material thorium oxide. It's an incandescent material that greatly increases the light output of the lantern when it's heated in the flame. At least until the early 90s Coleman used thorium in their mantles until replacing it with non-radioactive yttrium.
Seems thorium's radioactivity is mostly emitted as alpha particles which we all know don't travel too far from home. But it does explain Uncle Willard's problem with his right testacle which shriveled up like a raisin back in the 70s. Seems back in Willard's woodsman days he used to carry spare mantles in the watch pocket of his Levis.
Also explains why Cousin Cole has six fingers on his left hand.
Man can he play the banjo.

eBay Hot Sale - Late December

Hottest eBay sale of a 200A in the second half of December was a very sweet like-new 1966 model in a like-new clamshell case. Closed at a healthy $338.00 on 12/17. Woo-Hoo for somebody.
There's nothing particularly scarce or more desirable about a '66, this sold high based mostly on the wonderful condition. Also credit the seller with the 19 different photos of the lantern from every angle.

Sunshine Logo

Mark's looking for a Sunshine Logo that he can use to mark lanterns that he has rebuilt and customized. That's excellent thinking on his part. There's no good reason to be deceiving future collectors as to the nature of their shiny new finds.
